Point Loma Light: 40 x 30 -
Original Oil on Canvas
San Diego, California One of the eight west coast lighthouses built in 1855 in the Cape
Cod style, Point Loma's tower rises forty feet from the center of the keeper's house. Early
west coast lighthouses were originally built high up on hills, as were those in New England.
When it was realized that these high-shining lights generally shown above the low-flying
fog so prevalent along the Pacific Coast, they were replaced by lower towers near the sea
level, as was Point Loma light in 1891. Old Point Loma Lighthouse today is an architecturl
feature of Cabrillo National Monument, overlooking San Diego Harbor.
