Maude - '40s sardine fleet, Newport Beach, CA:
Part of the thriving West Coast sardine industry that preceded and followed W.W.II.
The Maude and her sistership, Maude II, fished out of Newport Beach and for the most part,
off-loaded their catch at the cannery on Balboa Island, occasionally going into San Pedro
where the majority of the sardine and tuna were processed. The decline of the West Coast
sardine industry began in the 1950s due mainly to foreign competition.
